Project: (3339) Crossley Park, Ripley

Client: Amber Valley Borough Council

Design: Ustigate Waterplay / Vortex International

Project Description: Paddling pool converted to Splashpad

Water Management: Flow Through System with GWT

Main Contractor: Ustigate Waterplay

Installation: 2014 / Area: 130m²

Challenge:

To replace the old paddling pool with a new and exciting aquatic play experience which is easy to maintain and environmentally friendly.

Success:

The old paddling pool provided the footprint for the new splashpad. There is a toddler bay with a cascading water feature and a shallow splash pool for the younger children. A variety of features incorporating water tunnels, spraying arches, aqua flowers and jet streams provide a challenging and entertaining aquatic play experience for all ages. The splashpad has proved to be extremely popular with the local children. The scheme is a flow through system with a grey water tank to collect and repurpose the water from the splashpad, either in the park or around the borough. A remote bowser was installed to allow for easy filling.

Crossley Park, Ripley is one of the few splashpads in the UK that is finished with a concrete surface. In Europe the majority of splashpads are finished with a concrete surface whereas in the UK the preference has been to finish with a a layer of wetpour. Where there is no fall height it is not a neccessity to have a wetpour surface. It is mostly added to provide a softer, non-slip environment and to add colour and theming to play areas.
