Main Contractor: Ustigate Waterplay

Project Description: Design and installation of inclusive Splashpad® with PlayNuk

Installation: 2021

Challenge:

Fareham Leisure Centre had served the Fareham community well since 1979. In 2019 Fareham Borough Council awarded Everyone Active the contract to manage Fareham Leisure Centre and their programme began with a £6.33M investment (initially funded by Fareham Borough Council) to modernise and enhance the facilities.

Success:

In 2020 designs for additional parking, a larger gym, new children’s soft play area, studio, climbing area and splashpad were approved by Fareham Borough Council.

Installation took place in 2021. Fareham Leisure Centre has a 80m² zero depth splashpad for all ages and abilities to enjoy being more active. Water play is a fun exercise proven to promote social development; physical and mental wellbeing. When installed at a local leisure centre it invites all local children to play, grow and build water confidence. The products at Fareham Leisure Centre include two play items from award-winning Explora, a collection that engages children to move, push, pull, spin and splash! There is Helio No.3 with its Mega Orb and north facing water spout for lots of spinning and splashing fun and Luna No.3 with Twistnozzle™ for lots of aim, fire and pattern making fun! Luna No.3 also has an orb to spin and splash manually or alternatively position Twistnozzle™ to fire the water streams at orb and orb will spin faster of its own accord. PlayNuk™ No.1 adds multi-level interactive play and climbing and sliding activities to Fareham’s playful mix. PlayNuk™ is a new breed of Elevations™ designed and developed to be more accessible and perfect for children 0 – 5 years old with its softer sprays, 6″ steps and double handrails. Fareham’s PlayNuk No.1 includes a kiddie racer waterslide. Back at ground level children have a choice of two more above ground play items, the first is Aqualien Flower No.3 standing proud with its Seeflow™ dome; spraying water upwards for it to rain down on any that crouch below. Seeflow™ is a clever material widely used on many Vortex products because when sunshine and water are present, Seeflow™ reacts by casting colourful reflections around the environment. The final above ground play item to be introduced is Frog No.2, a friendly water feature with Turntec™ technology inviting all children to take Frog No.2 on a 360° spin. Whilst doing so all three of Frog’s water streams will change direction too. All of our above ground play items are installed with a Toeguard™ to protect feet and toes. Our grand finale sits with our ground sprays. Fareham Leisure Centre has a vertical Geyser that arrives with a burst, two vertical Jet Stream No.2’s and three Split Stream’s dotted around to please everyone with their gentle pair of arched sprays. The surfacing is a multi-coloured, bright and cheerful design formed from EPDM wetpour. The splashpad at Fareham Leisure Centre is an environment where all ages and abilities can actively play together and grow their water confidence. The official launch of all of the new facilities at Fareham Leisure Centre took place on 16th and 17th October 2021 and local residents described the revamped leisure centre as “well worth the wait.”

BMX Freestyle Olympic medallist Declan Brooks, a visitor to the Fareham pool and gym every Thursday during his teenage years, was delighted to return to Fareham Leisure Centre and officially cut the ribbon, alongside Mayor of Fareham, Councillor Pamela Bryant.

Olympic BMX hero Declan Brooks reported to The News, Portsmouth: “It’s nice to see that the local area has put some money into something good. When you’ve got stuff like this there’s no excuses not to try hard and not do well, it would have been nice when I was a kid to have all this.”

Sean Woodward, Leader of Fareham Borough Council reported to The News, Portsmouth: “The centre now has amazing climbing facilities, a huge gym extension, exercise studios and lots more facilities. It is a building of over 40 years that has beautifully been brought up to date. It opened up originally as Fareham Swimming Pool and that was it and now we have the most fantastic facilities here for our people. It is so important to be making investments in health and leisure”

Councillor Sue Walker, Leisure and Community Executive Member at Fareham Borough Council said: “I am delighted to see Fareham Leisure Centre benefit from this injection of investment. It has been a social hub for more than 40 years and is now set to continue this legacy for many years to come. I hope that the fantastic new facilities will inspire more people to get active and excel in sport.”

Ryan Grant, Contract Manager at Everyone Active commented: “We’re so excited to welcome people back to the refurbished Fareham Leisure Centre. It will be great to see the local community benefiting from all the fantastic facilities we have to offer and to see the centre helping the community improve their health and wellbeing.”
