Project: (4339) Heanor Splash Pad
Client: Amber Valley Borough Council
Design: Ustigate Waterplay / Vortex International
Description: Paddling Pool + Splash Pad Scheme
Water Management: Flow Through System with GWT
Main Contractor: Ustigate Ltd
Installation: 2019
Area: 80m²
Challenge:
The paddling pool had reached the end of its economic life, and had restricted use because of its design. The paddling pool had been very popular at Heanor Memorial Park for several generations. Pleased with the popularity of the borough’s inclusive splash pad at Crossley Park at Ripley, Amber Valley Borough Council embarked upon a procurement process to establish a new aquatic play facility for its community.
Success:
Ustigate Waterplay were delighted to be awarded the contract to design and build a new aquatic play facility at Heanor Memorial Park, especially because it followed the success of a splash pad installed at Crossley Park, Ripley in 2014.
It was a pleasure to work with Amber Valley Borough Council on a second project and a joy to install a second aquatic play facility for Amber Valley’s community. Notably Amber Valley’s community enjoy aquatic play and it was great to be invited back to deliver more.
Heanor’s new splash pad provides Heanor Memorial Park with an inclusive aquatic play facility for everyone to enjoy for decades to come. The paddling and splash concept provides Heanor with much more aquatic play value and an extended aquatic play season.
The water management system is a flow through system that draws directly from the mains, with an additional grey water tank to collect and recycle water for irrigation. Effectively one supply of water feeds Heanor’s aquatic play and Heanor’s plants. All of our splash pad installations include a Ustigate in-house controller, enabling the facility operator to easily control sequences, hours of operation and water management from one screen.
Heanor Splash Pad Design
Installed in the footprint of the old paddling pool, the splash pad at Heanor Memorial Park has eighteen products including four ground activators and an activation bollard to ensure everyone can push a button to start a sequence.
Each activator is linked to a group of water features to enhance the play experience: There is fun to be had in not knowing where or in what direction the water is coming from next, and it is more fun when you have to move around the splash pad to generate a splash from every item. A sequenced splash pad maximises the interactive elements, and it is the most conserving way to provide aquatic play.
Central to our design, SunSpray No.1 is a bright and cheerful product standing three metres tall, complete with Twirltec™ technology. Twirltec™ is a friction-free, triple bearing system that allows children to spin the products. Children will have great fun spinning SunSpray No.1 and they will be rewarded with a spiralling water effects from above. There are two above ground features on Heanor Splash Pad and Aqualien Flower No.3 is the second to be introduced. Aqualien Flower No.3 is a fun flower that sprays water up into the air, as well as raining water down on water players below, complete with SeeFlow™ technology. When the sun shines down on Aqualien Flower No.3, the SeeFlow™ will react by reflecting colourful shadows on to the splash pad, a great aquatic play product that beams a bonus glow!
Both SunSpray No.1 and Aqualien Flower No.3 have been installed with a Safeswap™ anchor base to enable Amber Valley Borough Council to exchange the products for alternatives in the future, if they would like to.
At home with SunSpray No.1 and Aqualien No.3 are a variety of ground sprays, each providing water players with a welcome splash in a combination of ways. At Heanor Splash Pad you will find arched streams of water, single vertical streams of water, a fountain spray, a water tunnel and a wave spray that provides a nice thick, wide ribbon of water for children to play in.
All of the ground sprays that do not spray vertically are provided with Lineflow™ technology to enable the direction, height and spray zone of the feature to be set perfectly on site.
