Project: Longleat Safari Park
Client: The Longleat Estate
Design: Ustigate Waterplay / Vortex International
Main Contractor: Ustigate Waterplay
Installation: 2006
Area: 100m²
Challenge:
In 2006 Lord Bath invited Ustigate to design and build a splashpad to celebrate 40 years of welcoming visitors to Longleat Safari Park. Ustigate designed and built a splashpad in keeping with Longleat, complete with a low maintenance water management system.
Success:
Home to Lord Bath, Longleat House was built by Sir John Thynne in 1580 and it is widely regarded as one of the best examples of high end Elizabethan architecture in Britain. The Longleat Estate has been inviting visitors to Longleat for many years; initially inviting visitors to discover 369 years of history inside Longleat House from 1949 and later extending their visitor attractions to the grounds, opening the first drive through safari park outside Africa in 1966.
The splashpad is situated within the Adventure Castle play area at Longleat; nestled in an area surrounded by raised grassed banks that provide visitors with a welcome seat. Our bespoke design for Longleat includes a variety of ground jets that are activated by vibration sensor pads with a variety of interactive elements that enable water players to alter flow rates and spray effects. To further complement the castle theming, Ustigate commissioned an above ground Arrow feature with fine water sprays coming from its quills and installed it amongst the ground jets to give the impression of an archers’ arrow being fired into the centre of the splashpad. The wetpour surface replicates the Marquess of Bath Coat of Arms, a tribute to the generations of Thynn family that have established, nurtured and enhanced the Longleat Estate for all of us to appreciate and enjoy today. The water features are fed from an automated flow through system to minimise maintenance and running costs. All of the water sent to the splashpad is re-used to top up the nearby lake.
On 5th July 2006 Longleat Splashpad was officially opened to the public and Ustigate were delighted to witness Lord Bath and many more come out to play! – Happiness is upon us knowing thousands more will be enjoying a splash at Longleat in the future.

Koala Creek
2019 welcomed some very special residents to Longleat … Southern Koalas! The iconic marsupials have been settling in at Koala Creek in Longleat since October 2018 as part of a ground-breaking initiative by the Government of South Australia to enhance the management and conservation of the koala. Members of the public are able to visit Longleat’s koala residents in their spacious enclosure that includes a natural stream, eucalyptus tree, climbing poles, and naturally-themed indoor / outdoor habitats. Longleat is the only place to see koalas in England, and Longleat is the only place in all of Europe to look after southern koalas. The koalas have certainly made themselves at home at Longleat and proven Longleat to be their home sweet home via a successful breeding programme. In 2021 koala couple Violet and Burke delivered newborn Hazel and in 2023 koala couple Maisie and Burke delivered newborn Monty. Longleat’s koala family now includes Dennis, Violet, Maisie, Burke, Hazel, Monty and new for 2023, koala Yani has emigrated from Hong Kong! It’s one “bigger” happy family at Koala Creek since 2018 and we hope Longleat’s koala success continues.
