Project: (3153) Walsall Arboretum
Client: Walsall Council
Design: Ustigate Waterplay / Vortex International
Project Description: Water Play Expansion
Water Management: Recirculation System
Main Contractor: Ustigate Waterplay
Installation: 2013 / Area: 440m²
Challenge:
The old water play facility at the Walsall Arboretum had been adapted over the years into various forms of water play and was in need of a complete upgrade. The new recirculation system needed to fit into a nearby existing building. The design brief specified the need for a natural concept as part of the park is a conservation area.
Success:
The splashpad was built over the existing water play area. The existing building was an unusual shape and we would have certainly benefitted from more floor area! That said, our engineers rose to the challenge and a new PWTAG compliant recirculation system was installed into the existing building; this being the perfect location for the new plant room. Utilising the existing building did produce some cost savings to materialise the new facility.
The 440m² splashpad has 28 amazing water play features to please children of all ages. There is a splash pool with gentle low flow features for the smaller children and interactive above ground features to thrill the older children. The aquatic play at Walsall Arboretum is also future proofed with additional Safeswap™ anchors allowing for the adding and exchanging of alternative water feature products in the future, without the need to break the ground again.
The colour palette for the surfacing consists of only three colours. Beige was selected as the base colour with a little red and blue to mark out a number of features within the scheme. This trio of colours along with boulders, artificial grass, lawned areas and our stainless steel looking products pleased Walsall’s Council and community. It is a natural scheme to compliment the pretty park.
The aquatic play facility has been an outstanding success for Walsall Arbortetum.
